Even if you don’t operate a full internal PKI, you still need governance over certificate issuance for internal services and automation that renews certificates safely.

Misconception 30: “If we use HTTPS everywhere, MITM is not a concern”

TLS reduces man-in-the-middle (MITM) risk, but it depends on correct certificate validation and trust stores. Attackers can abuse compromised certificate authorities, install rogue root certificates on endpoints, or exploit users ignoring warnings.

In enterprise networks, TLS inspection proxies can also create blind spots if misconfigured. If endpoints trust the proxy root certificate, the proxy can intercept and re-encrypt traffic. That can be legitimate for security monitoring, but it increases the importance of controlling endpoint trust stores and proxy access.

This ties back to endpoint hardening: if attackers can install a rogue root certificate, they can intercept traffic to internal services, capture credentials, and downgrade trust.

Misconception 31: “Security testing is only for applications”

Application security is critical, but infrastructure and identity changes also need testing. The misconception is thinking that security testing equals penetration testing once a year. For IT operations, continuous validation is more effective: configuration checks, access reviews, recovery drills, and attack-path analysis.

If you change conditional access policies, test sign-in behavior for admins and break-glass accounts. If you change network segmentation, test management access paths and ensure monitoring still functions. If you rotate service account secrets, validate dependent services.

Treat security controls as production systems with change management and validation, not as static settings.

Misconception 32: “Break-glass accounts are optional”

When identity systems fail—conditional access misconfiguration, MFA outages, federation issues—you need a controlled way back in. The misconception is that emergency access accounts are too risky to have.

Break-glass accounts are risky if unmanaged. They are safer when:

Hardening still matters: patching, least privilege, restricted management interfaces, and monitoring. In cloud environments, private endpoints and private subnets are useful, but you still need to control identity and network paths.

This misconception often leads to neglected internal services with weak auth, default credentials, or outdated software because “no one can reach it.” In practice, internal reachability is exactly what attackers exploit after initial access.

Misconception 34: “Security is mostly about preventing breaches”

Prevention is important, but it’s not sufficient. Mature security assumes that some controls will fail and focuses on limiting blast radius and recovering quickly. The misconception is thinking the goal is to never be breached.

A more operational goal is to reduce the likelihood of compromise, reduce the impact if compromise occurs, and reduce the time to detect and respond. That’s where fundamentals converge: strong identity controls reduce initial access, segmentation reduces lateral movement, logging improves detection, and resilient backups improve recovery.

This is also where metrics help. Instead of “are we secure,” track:

  • Percentage of privileged accounts using phishing-resistant MFA.
  • Number of standing privileged role assignments.
  • Patch SLA compliance for critical vulnerabilities.
  • Coverage of endpoint management and EDR.
  • Restore test success rate and recovery time.

These are engineering metrics you can influence.

Misconception 35: “We can’t improve security until we replace legacy systems”

Legacy systems are real constraints, especially in OT, healthcare, and large enterprises. The misconception is that legacy blocks all progress. Often you can’t patch or modernize a system quickly, but you can still reduce risk around it.

Compensating controls are valid when they are explicit and monitored. For example, if a legacy server cannot be patched, you can:

  • Restrict network access to only required sources.
  • Remove interactive logons.
  • Monitor access and process activity more aggressively.
  • Place it behind an application proxy.
  • Isolate it in a dedicated segment.

This ties back to earlier sections: segmentation and identity reduce the harm of unpatchable systems.

Real-world scenario: Legacy app forces a safer admin model

A public-sector organization ran a legacy application that required an old Windows Server version. Replacing it would take a year. Rather than accept the risk broadly, they isolated the system in a dedicated VLAN, restricted inbound access to a small set of jump hosts, removed outbound internet access, and implemented strict logging on the jump hosts.

They also removed standing admin rights for the app operators and required time-bound elevation for maintenance windows. The legacy system was still legacy, but the attack surface and attacker mobility were sharply reduced.

Misconception 36: “If we document a standard, it’s implemented”

Written standards are necessary, but implementation is what matters. The misconception is assuming that because a baseline exists in a wiki, endpoints and servers match it.

Close the loop with configuration management and verification. Use MDM/GPO compliance reports, configuration drift detection, or periodic audits via scripts. The point is to treat security baselines like any other configuration: applied through automation and validated continuously.

Hardening protocols matters, but lateral movement is mostly about credentials and reachability. Disabling SMBv1 reduces exposure to a class of vulnerabilities, but attackers can still move using SMBv2/3, RDP, WinRM, SSH, remote WMI, or cloud APIs if credentials and network paths allow it.

So protocol hardening should be paired with credential hygiene (no shared local admin passwords, protected admin credentials, limited delegation) and segmentation (restrict admin protocols to management networks).

This is a recurring theme: single controls rarely solve systemic risk.

Misconception 38: “Security reviews are blockers, so teams avoid them”

Security reviews become blockers when they are late, subjective, or disconnected from delivery. The misconception is that security and delivery are inherently opposed.

Instead, define security requirements early and make them testable. If you can express requirements as checks (no public storage, mandatory MFA, no standing owner roles, logging enabled), teams can self-serve and pass reviews faster.

This also reduces the burden on security teams. They can focus on exceptions and threat modeling rather than rechecking basics.

Misconception 39: “We can rely on vendor best practices without understanding them”

Vendor guidance is helpful, but it’s generic. The misconception is assuming vendor best practices automatically fit your threat model and operational reality. For example, a vendor may recommend broad permissions for ease of integration, but your environment may require tighter scoping.

Adopt best practices as a starting point, then validate them against:

  • Your identity model and admin workflows.
  • Your compliance requirements.
  • Your segmentation and logging capabilities.
  • Your recovery objectives.

When you apply guidance with intent, you avoid insecure “quick starts” becoming permanent architecture.

Misconception 40: “If we can’t do everything, we shouldn’t start”

This is perhaps the most damaging misconception because it prevents incremental improvement. Security fundamentals compound. Small changes—phishing-resistant MFA for admins, removing shared local admin passwords, segmenting Tier-0 systems, enabling central logging, and testing restores—have outsized impact.

As you work through the misconceptions in this article, look for actions that are both high-impact and within your control. Start where attacker paths are shortest: identity, privileged access, endpoint admin separation, and backup control plane protection.
